Clare Hall

In early 2023 CFB secured a large project with Alpine Works ltd for UCL (university collage of London Clare Hall).

We had already worked with Alpine Works previously, suppling 3 x 20HP 4VT boilers and ancillaries for another UCL site in central London initiating an excellent working relationship.

This recent project comprised of 4 x 130HP 2000 kg/hr CFB 4VT steam boilers and all associated ancillaries supplied fully installed within a modular plantroom.

Each module (X 2) measured 12 meters in length, 4 meters wide and 4 meters in height, and weighed in at a hefty 50 tons.

The site in South Mimms (Clare Hall) is a College University pioneering the cure for Cancer and their current boilers had reached their end of life, so a “Turnkey modular plantroom” was an excellent solution for their replacement.

Advantages being 90% of the works were undertaken at our factory in Essex, and hugely reduced disruption on site, leaving minimal works to be completed once delivered and positioned.

The site at South Mimms was a challenge due to the location just off the well-known Services, the plant rooms had to navigate extremely narrow residential roads to reach the facility and be craned in to position from the country road outside.

This was overcome by removing all four boilers through the top boxes above the boilers which is a standard feature of our plantrooms to reduce the weight of the module, therefore reducing the size of the crane needed to enable it to fit.

The delivery, positioning and insertion of the boilers was all completed in one day.

Alpine completed all interconnecting pipework within the next few months and CFB returned to commission the plant in late 2023.

The modular plantroom option proved in this situation to be an excellent alternative to disruptive lengthy site work.
